MO*lecture 'Das Kapital 2.0' with Tariq Ali and Joseph Vogl in Ghent

Tuesday 7 December at 8pm in Vooruit, Ghent

The worldwide economic crisis caused a renewed interest in the work of Karl Marx. Only few defend a return to the strict interpretation of the 20th century but a reread of the 19th century analyses seems to inspire answers to the 21st century shortcomings of globalised capitalism. Does Marxism offer ideas that lead to a sustainable and productive economy contributing to human happiness worldwide? Or is it nothing more than a hype? Two international thinkers explain their position.

Tariq Ali

Tariq Ali is an author of Pakistani origin living in London. He wrote more than two dozen books on world history and global politics (amongst which The Clash of Fundamentalisms) and seven novels (as for example Night of the Golden Butterflies, part five of the Islam Quintet), which are translated in more than ten languages. He is also editor for the New Left Review. Title of his lecture: The crisis, the political response and the future of democracy.

Joseph Vogl

Joseph Vogl is a culture- and literature scientist and lectures in Berlin and Princeton. His most famous books are: Kalkul und Leidenschaft (2002) (Calculation and passion), Über das Zaudern (2007) (On hestitation), Soll und Haben (2009) (to should and to have) en Ort der Gewalt (2010) (Pl
